As I am in full, stereotypical, pregnant lady mode, it’s especially tough for me to name just one dessert to call my favorite. Anything sweet pretty much tops my list right now.
That’s why this has been and will continue to be an especially enjoyable holiday season for me.

Over Thanksgiving I enjoyed my fill of pie — specifically pumpkin, which has always been a weakness of mine. In fact, for many of my birthdays growing up, I would request a homemade pumpkin pie in lieu of a cake.

At this year’s Christmas celebrations, I plan to take full advantage of the abundance of cookies, cakes and fudge that ends up on family pitch-in tables. However, I’d have to say one of my favorite desserts is cheesecake.

This creamy delicacy is phenomenal dressed up with fresh strawberries or a caramel sauce drizzle, however I’ll take it with open arms (and fork at the ready) just plain with a delicious graham cracker crust.

So, why am I telling you all this?

It’s the holiday season — a time for celebration and in my mind, indulgence. Now, I’m all for leading a healthy lifestyle and I don’t normally advocate bingeing, well … except for just this once. In the spirit of letting go of diet inhibitions, in this issue we celebrate all-things sinfully bad for the waistline.

Check out the cuisine section. With stories on the best desserts available at local restaurants, a guide to after-dinner drinks, a look at the wonder that is chocolate and, of course, a recipe or two to top it all off, it’s sure to make your mouth water.

The holidays are also a time for reflecting on life’s blessings and remembering it’s the simple things — like the love of family — that matter most. One such poster couple for this mind-set is Mike and Janet Wadsworth. This Center Grove couple has had a lifetime of obstacles to overcome, yet they remain positive. Now, Mike faces the ultimate battle, a fight with cancer for his life, but he wakes each day thankful for another opportunity.

Be sure to check out the magazine’s regular departments, such as home trends and health, where in this issue we look at bathroom remodeling ideas and the wellness benefits of regular massage and skin treatments.

This issue’s travel story will transport you to the snow-filled wonderland that is Yellowstone in the winter. Photographer Bill Pohley takes us behind his lens with a glimpse from one of his recent trips to the national park.

Well, I’ll leave you to it then. Happy reading — and from everyone at South magazine, happy holidays and a blessed New Year!
